Which Altnet

Disclosure: We may earn a commission if you sign up with a provider through our links. It never changes which providers we list or their order. How we make money

Data sources and methodology

We keep two kinds of evidence separate: official Ofcom area coverage percentages, and provider-published town listings that we check by hand.

Ofcom Connected Nations

Area figures come from Ofcom’s Connected Nations open data. Ofcom data: January 2026 snapshot (published May 2026). Local-authority files include premises-weighted full fibre and gigabit-capable percentages. Postcode files support postcode-district roll-ups that we label as unweighted medians — they are not full-fibre percentages and they do not name providers.

Ofcom open data does not tell us which retail brand serves your street. We never infer an altnet from an Ofcom percentage alone.

Provider-published listings

A town page lists an altnet only when that provider names the town on its own coverage, build or town page (or an equivalent provider-owned source). Each listing carries a short evidence quote, the date we checked, and a link to the source. Third-party comparison sites may help us find leads; they are never the cited source.

Listings older than 120 days fail our publish gate until they are re-checked. Town pages only publish when they meet the quality gate (dated listings, Ofcom local-authority data, nearby towns).

What we refuse to invent

  • Address-level or postcode-level “you can get” claims
  • Hard-coded £/month prices in v1
  • Our own speed claims beyond a provider’s sourced tier names
  • Fake reviews, reviewers or “expert” bylines
